You may not think it is simple, to be a successful college student, but … it is.

By setting goals, having strong values, and using value methods to prioritize your activities, you can simplify life at college and succeed in obtaining your educational goals all while living a dynamic and successful life. A College Coach can help you sort out these issues and find your ultimate college success goals.

Of course, as with any process of success, there are a few rules:

1. Write down your goals.

Write down your primary goals, focus them on specific areas of your life, and break them into doable segments. Write them down. Formulate a plan on paper and put it where you can review it frequently to make sure you’re keeping up to date with your plan of action.

2. Prioritize your life.

Since you have your goals in front of you, written down, it’s fairly simple to look at the goals and see if the activities coming up are working toward your goals or not. Determine the energy and value you are willing to put into an activity based on its value within your goal plan.

3. Maintain strong personal boundaries.

Your ultimate goal requires you to maintain personal boundaries. This doesn’t mean that a crisis has to be ignored, but it does mean you need to consider the value of the crisis. For instance: your grandmother is very ill and your parents want you to come home for the weekend, by all means GO, visit grandma, support your family, and build those important relationships. OR your buddy got drunk and is calling you at 3AM to rescue him from the county hoochie, but you have an exam in the morning. Let him sit it out, sober up and pick him up after you pass your exam. He needs to realize his emergency is due to his own bad behavior and not your problem. (In fact, if stone sober, he doesn’t immediately apologize for waking you up at 3 AM, leave him in there for another month.)

Should one attend college near home or gain independence by moving abroad? In all reality, it depends on the individual’s preferences, attributes and emotional wellbeing, but here I shall give you a rough outline of what to consider when making the crucial decision.

When attending college near home, you have some advantages that others may not in their first few months. An individual attending college near home has a reliable support network, while many fellow college students are establishing their own, newer networks. Second, said individual knows the area better than a new student, which is useful for shopping for dormitory necessities, and for knowing where the local theaters and malls are, watching movies and shopping being frequent ways to pass the time. Speaking of going into town, people with a closer residence, often have cars more often than those who are not from the area. Furthermore, and quite obviously, whether you dorm or not, you can drop by home as necessary.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages. These benefits, save for the car, are often short term; there are also more important disadvantages. For example, you are still, while growing more independent, largely under home’s reins. Regardless of the disadvantages, staying relatively close to home is the preferred choice with approximately 70% of students attending college within 100 miles of their residence.

Now, there are some great advantages to living away from home. One has the chance to build their own networks of support, preparing oneself for the need to get out in the community when one starts a career in the future. You get to experience a different culture when you attend college far away from your own comfortable local area, therefore bringing you to a more understanding view of others.

Alternatively, being so independent can be a great disadvantage. You have little to nothing to fall back on if things do not work out in regard to some issue; you must learn to accept responsibility for your actions sooner. Additionally, getting started in a new location is never trouble-free, especially if you are a timid person. Despite the disadvantages, those that do get out more independently often comment on how it has helped them mature faster.

With all this information on how far away to attend college, there are many issues to consider, and what may be an advantage of one issue, when closely inspected, may just as well be a disadvantage of the same issue. Whatever you decide to do, the biggest advice is to carefully weigh your options when it comes to college location.

Your player video is a fantastic way to demonstrate in an engaging fashion all of the skills and talents you have worked so hard to develop in your baseball career until now. One of the greatest benefits of the

video, in the eyes of college coaches is the fact that the coach can watch you play on his computer without ever leaving his office. It is important for you to create a well orchestrated video that has been edited properly. If you send a college coach a video of the all star game that you played in two years ago, filmed by your mom on a shaky vhs camera then chances are that the coach is not going to watch the video for very long and that the video along with your player profile and your chances of playing for his team will all wind up in the wastebasket. Proper planning and diligent execution of a planned video will make sure that your video is not only seen by college coach but it will also help get you to the top of his recruitment list.

Step 1: Lights, Camera, Action

1) Film the video on a sunny day. The late afternoon and early morning are the ideal times for filming because the lighting will cause less glaring and a clearer picture.

2) Use a tripod. There is nothing worse than a shaky video. A tripod will even allow you to film the video yourself if you are short on people to help you out.

3) Take your time. Remember, the video does not have to be filmed in one day. It may take a few sessions to get all of the proper shots that you need.

4) Wear a clean, pressed baseball uniform. No college coach wants to see you rounding the bases in your grass stained sweats, no matter how good you are. Your image does matter. You may even want to consider getting a hair cut if it’s been a while.

Step 2: The video introduction. Before you film the action sequences you should stand in front of the camera, in uniform, and introduce yourself. Include the following information in your introduction.

1) Your name and the high school you attend.

2) Your year of graduation

3) You academic achievements

4) Why you want to play college baseball

Step 3: Editing…The Cutting Room Floor

1) In Hollywood they say that “editing is everything” and the same concept holds true for the production of your promotional video.

2) Edit out all of the “dead air time”. Don’t include sequences of you walking out to the mound if you are a pitcher. Don’t include images of practice swings.

3) Timing is everything. Limit your video to a running time of 5 minutes. Anything longer will bore the college coach. Remember, you need to grab his attention in as short a period of time as possible. Would you want to watch a boring commercial for more than 5 minutes? Probably not. Try to make the video as interesting and action packed as possible.

4) You are the star of your movie. Make yourself shine. Only include examples of your best performances.

Step 4: Promotion

Producing your video is just the first step in the right direction. After the video has been produced you need to begin promoting it. When Steven Spielberg makes a movie he already has his distribution channels marketing and selling it before it is even ready for release. Unfortunately, you don’t have this luxury. You have to use some guerilla marketing tactics to get your video in the hands of the people who need to see it.

1) The Internet — Post your video to as many online sites as possible. You never know who is going to see it. Make sure that you are using name as a keyword when you are leaving tags on websites such as Youtube.com. The tags allow your videos to show up in the search results when somebody googles your name.

2) Make at least 50 copies of your player promotional video. There are websites online that will duplicate the video for you. You can also create customized, full color labels for your cd rom. You won’t be recruited based solely on the “look and feel” of your player video and its’ packaging or design but details do matter. Coaches are looking for players who take their college baseball seriously and when you take the extra time to produce a well made player video it speaks volumes to the college coach who is looking at it.
